Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is dedicated to the improvement of health for all people through the discovery, dissemination, and translation of knowledge, and the education of a diverse global community of research scientists, public health professionals, and others in positions to advance the public’s health. Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health houses the first and largest department focused on international health and has research in over 120 countries. The university-wide Center for Humanitarian Health is a collaborative academic program that draws upon a variety of disciplines, including epidemiology, demography, health systems management, and political science.

  • Dr. Hannah Tappis

    Hannah Tappis, DrPH, MPH is a Senior Measurement, Evaluation and Learning Advisor at Jhpiego - an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, and associate faculty in the Department of International Health where her work focuses on generating and using evidence to improve the quality of reproductive, maternal and child health services in conflict-affected settings. She has more than 15 years of experience working with Ministries of Health, UN agencies, international and local NGOs in Africa, Asia and the Middle East and is currently co-chair of the Interagency Working Group for Reproductive Health in Crisis (IAWG) maternal and newborn heath committee, and member of multiple other interagency initiatives focused on strengthening health systems and services in crisis-affected settings.   • Dr. Paul Spiegel

    Dr. Spiegel is a physician by training, is internationally recognized for his research on preventing and responding to complex humanitarian emergencies. Before becoming Center for Humanitarian Health Director, Paul was the deputy director of the Division of Programme Management and Support Services for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Prior to joining the UN in 2002, Paul worked as a medical epidemiologist in the International Emergency and Refugee Health Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He also worked as a medical coordinator with Médecins Sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde in refugee emergencies, as well as a consultant for numerous organizations. Dr. Spiegel will serve as the Co-Research Director for EQUAL. @pbspiegel

  • Meighan Mary

    Meighan Mary, PhD MPH is research faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She has over a decade of experience in reproductive, maternal and neonatal health research and technical assistance in francophone sub-Saharan Africa, SE Asia, and MENA. Her research interests include implementation science to strengthen linkages between communities and MNH health systems, measurement of quality of care in LMICs, and maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) in humanitarian and fragile settings.

  • Salomine Ekambi

    Salomine Ekambi, MSPH is an early-career researcher with a Master of Sciences in Public Health focused on social and behavioral interventions, and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She has experience in both qualitative and economic analyses particularly as it relates to sexual and reproductive health among adolescent girls and young women in East Africa. She serves as JHU’s EQUAL Research Associate supporting activities across workstreams and cross-cutting initiatives.

  • Dr. Shatha Elnakib

    Dr. Shatha Elnakib, PhD, MPH has over a decade of experience working at the intersection of sexual and reproductive health and humanitarian assistance. As an Assistant Scientist in the International Health Department at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Shatha leads several mixed-methods research projects focused on generating evidence to improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health services and policies in humanitarian settings. Prior to starting her faculty appointment, Shatha worked for the Population Council, UNFPA, UNICEF and the World Health Organization. As part of the EQUAL consortium, Shatha supports research on midwifery education and workforce participation in conflict-affected settings. Shatha holds an MPH in Epidemiology from Columbia University and a PhD in International Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
