Somali Research and Development Institute (SORDI)

SORDI is a think-tank accredited by the Somali Federal Government, engaged in multidisciplinary research, learning, and capacity sharing. SORDI specializes in addressing complex humanitarian problems in Somalia, including integrated approaches to health systems strengthening, accelerated quality education programs learning, and is part of the first private sector partnership for health in Somalia.  As part of the EQUAL consortium, SORDI will conduct implementation research on community health worker delivered maternal and newborn health services as well as an assessment of midwifery education and services.

Meet the SORDI team supporting EQUAL

  • Dr. Abdi Dalmar

    For more than three decades Dr. Dalmar has worked as a medical and public health professional across the globe. He is experienced in medical education, community-based intervention research and health systems strengthening in fragile and conflict-affected settings. He has lived and worked in Somalia, United Kingdom, Kenya, Tanzania, The Gambia, Ghana, South Africa, Ethiopia and India. As the President and Chief Executive Officer of SORDI, Dr. Dalmar oversees the strategic and operational performance of all the programs, leads priority initiatives, and manages strategic business development with public and private engagements. He is also a Professor of Public Health and Ophthalmology at the largest medical university in Somalia, Benadir University, he has also served as a WHO EMRO region commissioner on Social Determinants of Health.   • Asia Mohamed

    Asia Mohamed works as a Midwife, a researcher, and a blogger. A health professional who has spent the last seven years in Somalia working as a midwife and neonatal care nurse for various think tanks and local non-profit organizations.

    She holds a Batchelor degree in midwifery as well as a Master's degree in Disaster Resilience. She has extensive health-care experience and is a member of the Somali Midwife Association (SOMA).

    As a young female activist for democracy, stability, and social inclusion, Asiya served as a domestic observer in Somalia's presidential and parliamentary elections in 2021/2022. She is also FGM activist in Mogadishu and a part-time Islamic studies instructor for young Somali females.

    Asiya is a senior researcher at SORDI and has managed numerous research projects involving data collection, monitoring and evaluation, and health care system strengthening. She is currently working as an EQUAL researcher in Somalia. Follow her work on Twitter via @aasiya_mohamed

  • Dr. Mohamed Jimale

    Dr. Jimale is a health professional who has been working as public health professional for the last 6 years in Somalia. He is a medical doctor and has MPH. He is a senior researcher at SORDI, and he has managed complex research projects that involved data collection, M& E, policy and health sector actions plan development and health care system strengthening. He was a member of National taskforce for Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR) between 2017 and 2018. Dr. Jimale is serving as Deputy Principal Investigator (PI) of EQUAL in Somalia.   • Dr. Hawa Abdullahi

    Dr. Hawa Abdullahi is a public health professional who has been working in emergency humanitarian settings for the last six years. She has master degrees in maternal reproductive health. Hawa has an extensive experience in health sector programming that includes designing, implementing and monitoring of Health and Nutrition programs. She also has rich experience in managing research projects and teams by providing strategic oversight and effective coordination. Currently she is a researcher of EQUAL in Somalia.   • Maryan Ahmed

    Maryan Ahmed is a humanitarian and development researcher who has been working in the development sector for the last seven years. She has a Masters degree in development studies. Maryan has worked with a range of NGOs and academic institutions in South Africa and Somalia focused on areas including migration, development management and planning and community development projects. She also has worked in various capacity building programs aimed at improving service delivery for the Benadir Administration in Mogadishu, Somalia. Maryan is currently serving as a researcher with SORDI as part of the EQUAL consortium.

  • Amal Abdukadir

    Amal is Projects fund manager at SORDI. She holds master degree of Finance at university of Nairobi Kenya. Amal has extensive experience in the managing financial actions, tracking cash flow and financial planning as well as analyzing financial strengths and weaknesses, proposing corrective actions, and analyzing current and past financial data. She also has tremendous experience in Project manager such us, Planning and forecasting, Budgeting and Tracking and monitoring. Amal has worked in various public and private sectors as Finance manager and as project manager assistance. She is also currently part of the EQUAL consortium and a member of Gender, Equity and Inclusion working group.
